Overview
Bir Hospital, established in 1947 BS, is the oldest hospital in Nepal and has a proud history of 125 years. It is the first hospital where modern medicine was practiced in Nepal, and every modern medical service in the country has roots in this hospital. Many senior doctors who were pioneers in modern medicine in Nepal started their careers in this hospital. Bir Hospital has provided medical education to different levels of health personnel, and it was used for the clinical practice by Institute of Medicine, Tribhuwan University. In 2059/60 BS, the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) was established, and Bir Hospital is an affiliated hospital for the program. Currently, around 100 MD, MS, and MDS residents are enrolled each year, and superspecialty fellowship courses and Doctorate of Medicine and Master of Chirurgery programs have been started. Additionally, nursing programs were started in 2013 BS and have gone through various changes, and now Bir Hospital is on the verge of starting a Master of Nursing program.
