It is named after Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Nepal, who died of throat cancer in 1982. The hospital initially started offering day services in 1995 and began treating inpatients in 1999. Funding for the hospital was provided equally by Nepal and China.
